The weather rebounded in a big way this week as clear skies, warm days and relatively light winds made for ideal fishing conditions on the lake. It was evident early in the week that the cold snap of the previous week did indeed ignite the fishing as anticipated. The surprising thing about the bite this week was that nearly every boat that went out hooked into or landed an Alper. A variety of baits were working but nightcrawlers and orange Gulp dough seemed to be the best. Trolling slowed a bit as the fish have come into the shallower areas hanging 5-15ft off the shoreline but a few nice fish were landed on Rapalas and trolled worms. The plastic bite has really come alive with orange or white jigs and pink or orange Powerworms doing some serious damage. Top fish of the week was a 6lb 8oz beauty caught by Steve Smith of Moreno Valley on a Orange/Yellow mini-jig. Other notable catches include a 6lb 4oz 'bow caught by Carl Snyder of Napa, CA using a Rainbow pattern Thomas Bouyant, a 6lb 4oz fish caught by Tim Carnahan of Sky Valley, CA using a white mini-jig, a 5lb 14oz fish caught by Doug Morgan of La Mesa, CA using a trout trap.
It should be noted that due to the drop in water level, the back of the lake behind the island is now off-limits to rental boats. Also, private boats can no longer launch at South Lake and will not be able to launch for the remainder of the season. The gate at the top of the launch ramp is closed and locked and will not be reopened for any reason.
