South winds made fishing difficult during the middle of the week but once the winds died down on the weekend the fishing picked up. The plastic bite really improved this week with the falling water level and folks tossing Orange Powerworms, Lip Ripperz or mini-jigs got into some nice fish. Trolling Wooly buggers continues to be another hot tactic at the lake. Due to the weather there was very little fishing pressure this week so it's hard to say exactly how many fish would have been caught had there been many anglers out there but the good thing about that is that the majority of the nice DFG plant we got on Tuesday, as well as the lion's share of the Alpers put in the previous week are still hanging around. The heaviest South Lake fish of the year was landed on Saturday by Kyle Dodder of Yucaipa, CA and weighed in at an impressive 7lbs 6oz. Kyle nailed the fish on an Orange Poweworm and also managed a fish just under 4lbs using the same rig. The water level at the lake is still dropping pretty fast so the South Lake boat landing staffers will be designating the area behind the island as off limits for boat rentals due to a ton of underwater hazards. Hopefully in a few weeks the water level will create one main inlet just to the west of the Island which would concentrate fish in a big way. Again, this bodes well for not on the planter rainbows and Alpers, but also improves folks' chance of scoring a big brownie come the spawn.
