Fishing stayed strong this week after another stocking of Alpers trophy rainbows in the 4-8lb class went into South Lake. Boat Landing staff put in our largest Alpers plant of the year on September 6th. There are also lots of 1lb+ fish leftover from last weekend's DFG plant in addition to the typical planter sized rainbows so stringers were heavy all week. Olive or Black wooly buggers trolled on top along the rockslide or jigged near the inlets is still the hot ticket. Bait dunkers were scoring quality fish using rainbow sparkle Powerbait and inflated Crawlers. Gabriel Melendez was the top angler of the week scoring a 5lber and 6lb 6oz toad in consecutive days. He caught both fish using Wooly Buggers. Other notable catches came for Jim Green of Laguna Niguel who scored a 5lb 15oz 'bow on an olive Wooly Bugger and Richard Natividad of Roland Heights who nailed a 5lb 10oz fish using a Thomas Bouyant. The back of the lake is still accessible right now but it's difficult to say how long that will be the case as we get deeper into fall. It should also be noted that due to the drop in water level, private boats can no longer launch at South Lake and will not be able to launch for the remainder of the season. On September 6th, Alpers Trout Ranch brought us the biggest load of Alpers we've put in all year which makes this the second big plant of trophy Rainbows in as many weeks. With continued DFG plants and another Alpers plant still in store for South Lake, the fall fishing should be fantastic this year!
