What a wonderful week at the Lake especially this past weekend – seems Mom will be warming us up a bit this week. It’s going to be down-right hot in Bishop this weekend with temps over the century mark – best be thinking its Lake time – a cool breeze and the scenery – quite breathtaking! With the warmer temps, the Lake has risen about 2 feet from last week and the pontoon boat is now on the Lake and available for rent.
And even more exciting – the catching part of fishing is picking up – saw quite a few nice size limits heading for the frying pan. The best catching still remains at the back of the Lake around the DingleBerry Inlet using NightCrawlers, Salmon Eggs and PowerBait. Trolling is getting better around the shoreline or in the channels. Drifting thru the channels with just a NightCrawler brought in a few stringers as did fishing along the shoreline with PowerBait or NightCrawlers. Had a nice stocking of pan-size fish along with some trophies from DFW on Thursday and those stockings should start happening weekly now. We’ll also be getting a BIG FISH stocking from Desert Springs Trout Farm out of Oregon soon.
Jon VanZile along with Jared Starr and Angelica Vargas brought dinner to the table landing a 2-pounder on Salmon Eggs with a few extra for Bullit.
The CHSRA Finals Rodeo is this week in Bishop. Several hundred of California's best cowboys & cowgirls plus families, friends and fans are arriving in Bishop for the CHSRA State Finals Championship. Since 2005, our community has hosted this prestigious and exciting event and the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau is proud to support this important project. If you happen to be in town this week, stop by the Fairgrounds and cheer on these youngsters!
The fruit trees around the store are starting to flower – the CrabApple, Red Delicious and Yellow Delicious Apples. The White Lilac is in blossom and the fragrance down the path is intoxicating. Some of the wildflowers have started blooming – I’m sure with these warmer temps and the showers from the past month they’ll be popping up all over.
The skeeters are back, so don’t forget the bug juice, but remember to try and keep it, your sunscreen and any other Foo-Foo juices off your hands – fish don’t like the taste or smell.
If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –that sun is pretty bright against the blue sky and the glare off the water. AND DON’T FORGET A JACKET!
If you’re planning on hiking – PLEASE BE PREPARED – hike with a buddy – leave a note on where you’re headed – when you’re expected back – what you’re wearing – take plenty of water & food – dress in layers – you’ll start out cool, but will probably warm up – CHECK THE WEATHER! Not only is your life on the line, so are the Search and Rescue Teams. Also, if you meet stock on the trail, please go to the low-side, that way if the mules are startled they’ll go to the high side and not down the canyon.
Looks like Mom is drying us out and warming us up. Temps up at the Lake are expected to be in the low-80s for highs and the high-40s for lows. You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.
