A message from the Inyo County Sheriff’s and CalTrans District 9 offices:
STATE ROUTE 168W (BISHOP CREEK) ACCESS TO RETRIEVE VEHICLES
Inyo County Sherriff, CHP - Bishop and Caltrans District 9 would like to inform the public that access to remove previously trapped vehicles will be available today until 3:00 p.m. Access past the road closure will be with law enforcement escort only.
U.S. Forest Service - Inyo National Forest has closed Sabrina Lake and North Lake campgrounds and trailheads (Piute Pass and Lamarck Lakes), therefore there will be no incoming traffic allowed. Today’s opening is restricted to vehicle removal only. Thunderstorms are predicted today and may impact the stability of the slide, forcing authorities to close the road. Consequently, vehicle retrieval efforts early on may be more successful. Caltrans has planned the hard closure of State Route 168W to begin tomorrow, July 25, 2018, for cleanup efforts. There is no anticipated date for reopening the road.
For the latest highway information please visit the Caltrans QuickMap site at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).

LAKE SABRINA BOAT LANDING IS CLOSED UNTIL HWY 168 IS REOPENED - PLEASE DO NOT WALK UP THE ROAD - CALTRANS HAS ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH WITHOUT HAVE TO WATCH FOR YOU!!!
It was definitely a wild one at the Lake this week. We received over 5 inches of rain along with a good dumping of hail on the Thursday prior to the slides that closed Hwy 168 West on Sunday afternoon at about 2:45pm. We had had a previous slide on Saturday afternoon between the North Lake Road and Sabrina Camp that CalTrans cleaned up quickly, they were back up early Monday morning assessing the Sunday afternoon slide situation and worked hard to get a one car wide lane open for cars to pass next to the slide area before the next deluge started.
After the last car had passed the winter road closure gate the next downpour began dropping another inch of rain. And if that’s not enough we’ve got ThunderBoomers in the forecast for the rest of the week – so stay tuned on the opening of the road. The South Lake Road is still wide open and there is plenty of camping in the Canyon on the other side of the hill.
