The DFG made their first plant of the season on Thursday which really helped the bite at the lake. Then the Alpers truck made a visit on Friday and put in a load of trophy fish, that really put things in high gear. Folks out in rental boats seemed to have the best luck as the fish spread out quickly after being stocked. Drifting crawlers or Powerworms or trolling wooly buggers and Thomas Bouyants were seemed to be the best producers for most. Folks using Berkley Powerworms and Lip Ripperz Jigs did great on big fish near the rock slide area. The inlet was a little inconsistent with some folks knocking 'em dead and others not getting a bite, perhaps the moon phase played a part here.
Despite Low Water Levels, the South Lake Staffers helped DFG get 1000lbs of rainbows planted in South Lake this week using 8-inch PVC pipe and some scrap lumber as a brace. Quite an entertaining sight!
The Bishop Creek Canyon Summer Classic is still rolling and there are at least four tagged fish still swimming around in South Lake. Tagged fish (yellow tags) caught from South, Sabrina, North, Intake II and Weir are worth $50 to $500 each. It's only $5 to register and everyone who participates is entered in a drawing for a $500 cash prize, tackle prizes and a fall fishing package valued at over $500!
Also of note, the Bishop Creek Canyon Fall Classic was announced this week. Throughout the month of September Inyo County & the Bishop Chamber of Commerce will be planting a big load of Alpers trout including several tagged trout worth up to $500. For the fall derby, all canyon waters including Bishop Creek will be planted with tagged fish!!!!
South Lake water level remains below the end of the launch ramp but with the excellent weather it's coming up a well over a foot a day and we expect the back of the lake to begin filling up any day now. Private boaters are not able to launch yet due to the low water level....maybe in another week it will be possible.
