The early arrival of summer weather treated visitors in the Bishop Creek Canyon with ideal conditions this week. Along with the great weather we've seen outstanding fishing including two beautiful holdover Alpers that came out of South Lake. The first, a 6lb 13oz rainbow caught by Brian from Lake Elsinore, CA on rainbow Powerbait, and a 4lb 2oz beauty caught on a crawler by Jeff Verdick of Palmdale, CA. South Lake has been absolutely on fire since it iced out on May 12th . ??Nightcrawlers, Orange Lip Ripperz, Red/White jigs and Red Berkley Powerworms have been the best producers for high numbers of fish. Lake Sabrina, the middle fork of Bishop Creek and North Lake were all stocked with Alpers this week so a higher number of heavy fish should be expected over the next week or so. ??
The South Fork of Bishop creek is producing well for bait anglers using nightcrawlers or salmon eggs. The first mosquito hatch of the season has reached the 9000ft elevation so fly casters looking to fish the upper reaches of the South Fork of Bishop Creek and Weir Lake should be equip with some rather large, say size 16 or so mosquito patterns if they want to match the hatch.
The higher elevation lakes are accessible but there is still a few feet of snow in many places over the 10,000ft elevation and many of the backcountry lakes have some ice on them. If the weather holds up, it won't be long before those backcountry lakes are thawed.
