Water Conditions

With temperatures remaining in the 80s throughout the weekend, water temperatures are relatively the same as last week on the Truckee River. In the upper sections of the Truckee River, the water is warm and not great for fishing. Anglers should focus most of their efforts from Martis Creek to the Stateline because colder water is being released into the river here. Here are the current flows on the Truckee River: 270 CFS out of Tahoe City, 315 CFS near Glenshire, 450 CFS at the Boca confluence, and 500 CFS near Farad.

Tips for the Week

Currently, anglers fishing on the Truckee River are experiencing the most success with tightline nymphing. It seems that using longer leaders tapered down to 5x tippet is the most effective approach. Anglers are advised to use smaller flies to entice the fish, and casting behind structures has been producing excellent results. The fish are mainly congregating in areas with fast, oxygenated water, so targeting these spots is a good strategy. For anglers wanting to dry fly fish the Truckee River right now, the evening seems to be the best time to catch the hatch.

Suggested Flies or Lures

Some fly favorites to try this week on the Truckee River are Perdigons in Yellow, Golden Stones, Pale Morning Duns, Midges and Blue Winged Olives.
