Hello fellow anglers. Not really the best weather for fishing right now in the sierra's. But I do want to pass along some info for an alternative.
Starting January 18th to the 21st will be the International Sportsmen's Expo in Sacramento California. You can go to the International Sportsmans Expo Sacramento website to get the itinerary for all the days and times for each of the demos and exhibits. They will have the Western bass demo tank with a casters demonstration of swimbait and crankbait techniques. Fly- tying how to clinics. Most manufacturers of fishing Tackle will be on hand with the newest presentations. There will be boat manufactures and outdoor outfitters fishing and hunting guides. The list is too large to include in this report, but you can see the list on their website. The California Fish and WildLife staff will be onsite and available to answer questions and provide additional information on CDFW resources and offerings. Our fisheries branch will also be available to discuss ongoing programs and fishing opportunities throughout the state. Screenshot or print out the above coupon for $3 off an adult admission ticket (one use per customer). I have been to this show, and I have to tell you one thing. Plan for an all day event or multiple days. It is hard to take in all they have to offer at this show in a short time. The location is at the Cal Expo fairgrounds 1600 Exposition Blvd Sacramento CA. This is an event all anglers and sportsman should experience at least once in their life.
As for the local fishing in the high sierras. I never thought I would say this, but please stay away from lakes and streams for a while. A person broke through the ice at Caples lake last week, but was able to get back to shore. The higher lakes are still not stable enough to ice fish at this time. The shore area may have 4-6 inches of ice on it. But the center of the lake may only have an inch or so.. let's be safe. Do you want to risk your life to catch a 14 inch trout? When I get confirmation of safe ice, I will pass it along to you. Plus, now with our recent storms this week. You can add a few feet of snow on top of unstable ice conditions.
As for the rivers in Alpine County. The east fork Carson River is full of fish, but the river is also half covered with ice and a foot or more of snow on top of that. It's that time of year to check your gear, change your line and lube up your reel.
And if you get to the ISE show, you can pick up some new tackle. Good luck and may see you at the show. If you have a picture of your catch. Send it to [email protected]. I will see you on the waters after the storms settle down. Good fishin' and tight lines.
Good luck on your next fishing adventure. If you have a question. a report in our local fishing area or have a photo of your catch, send it to [email protected]. Hope to see you on the waters. Good fishin' and tight lines.
